Astronomical Cost of Rail Travel!

I recently bought a Two Together Railcard on the web site www.trainline.com

for £30 giving us a 30% discount for rail travel any time after 9.00 a.m.

I have to say I was surprised to discover the high cost of rail travel, not to mention how
unreliable and frustrating using the service is these days!

A ticket for two people from Aberystwyth to London Paddington after 9.00 a.m would cost us
at least £106.80 with the 2 Together card discount (otherwise £161.80)

Now consider the cost of travelling first class, while still being prone to annoying delays:

The same above mentioned journey would cost us £525.40 for a first class return ticket
for two persons!

It makes you wonder who can afford to pay these fares?

During our recent train journey from Cardiff to Reigate, on the return journey our
scheduled train was delayed by an hour from Reading to Cardiff.

Apparently you can claim compensation from 25% to 50% of the ticket price for any
delays by filling in an online form. I shouldn't imagine this will be plain sailing!

Not exactly a great advert for public transport and maybe an argument for nationalising
our rail industry?

Incidentally, on our journey what struck me was the difference between Cardiff and Reading
railway stations. The Reading station was great, while the Cardiff station was bleak to say the least!
