Your Bottle of Wine and Taxation!

When you buy a bottle of wine from your local supermarket, the actual wine only accounts for 25% of the total cost! ITV's show 'Save Money, Good Food' throws light on this fascinating fact!

https://www.itv.com/hub/save-money-good-food/2a4864a0013

If you thought Scrooge was mean, look at how much the Chancellor demands in tax when you
buy a bottle of wine at your greengrocers for £5. A whopping 50%!

This web site shows you that when you pay £10 for a bottle of wine, more of your money
actually goes in to the wine making.

Cheers and Merry Christmas!

Clean up your act with a new Mini!

If you have an old diesel car pre 2009 and you fancy a cool new Mini car,
you may be entitled to a couple of thousand pounds under the government's
scrappage scheme, aimed towards getting the major culprits in terms of pollution off our roads!

To find out details regarding your car's emissions, visit this site:

http://carfueldata.direct.gov.uk/search-new-or-used-cars.aspx

By visiting this site, the RAC will help you to decide whether your car falls in to
group EU4 in order to qualify for this scheme.

https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/know-how/euro-emissions-standards/

I believe that Vauxhall have a similar scheme with up to a healthy £6,000 sum
for scrapping your old diesel banger!

Happy motoring behind the wheel of a quirky new Mini or dependable Vauxhall!

House and Contents Insurance

It's that time of year when it's time to renew my house and contents insurance.

The first rule to learn is that in this field 'loyalty does not pay!'

Having banked with HSBC for over 40 years, this year's premium has increased 23% since last year!

Time to log on to a comparison site such as Go Compare, Confused.com or Money Supermarket. Having spent about 25 minutes filling in the online form, I discover that I can obtain the same level of cover for a £100 less!

Do bear in mind that you can also get cash back at sites like Top Cashback, so it's very much a case of working out how to get the best saving, since the highest cash back may only be available on certain policies.

For example, via Go Compare I was quoted a premium of £119 with Admiral. Using the Top Cashback web site, the £70 cash back offer was only available if you took out the Platinum policy at £185 which naturally offered greater cover to include e.g boiler and central heating cover. A simple calculation i.e deducting £70 cash back from £185 gives you a price of £115. This means you are effectively £4 better off and with much better cover.

In effect for less than an hours work, you have benefited to the tune of £100.

Debt card not Credit card!

Credit cards should be renamed debt cards because unless you pay the debt off in full at the end of each month, you will fall further and further into debt given that the service provider will charge interest of at least 15% on your debt!

You could find yourself in that pathetic situation where at least half of the minimum repayment each month will be evaporated paying the high interest charged!

It is the equivalent of throwing your money on to the fire!

The lesson is only spend what you can afford to pay off in full at the end of each month!

In the good old days, wise people would save up before making a purchase. Given the present financial crisis, we may well have to return to this common sense approach!

Only spend after your boat comes in!

The true cost of using 118118 to obtain a telephone number!

Recently while using the 118118 service to obtain the telephone number of a local hotel and to be connected, I ended up paying £8.79 for a 1 minute 27 second call!

Having highlighted these excessive charges on social networking sites, I have been promised money back and I received this reply:

Hello Aled,

Thank you for your recent correspondencel.

You have been more than gracious in your understanding of how the service works and we do value your custom.

Thus a goodwill gesture refund for £8.00 is on its way to your door. Please allow up to 28 days for delivery.

My apologies for any inconvenience caused and thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

In future you could try our alternative services, such as 118 811 which is a fixed £1.00 charge from a landline for simple, single number enquires. 0800 118 FREE for entirely free calls.  Text enquiry responses cost £3.50, while 118.com is free to use. You would however have to contact your service provider to see if they put additional access charge costs on top of these services but I do hope they are helpful.

If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me again.

Kind regards,

Roxan

The best advice therefore is to visit their web site 118.com and obtain the service free of charge or so they tell me!
